Each month Kuppa will shine a spotlight on some great Indigenous charities and community initiatives.
This month we are focusing on the ‘Deadly Sista Girlz’ program run by the Waalitj Foundation. Deadly Sista Girlz is a culturally appropriate healthy lifestyle program which aims to improve engagement and education amongst school-aged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls.
Participants are enabled to make informed decisions about their personal health and well-being to lead a positive and healthy lifestyle. Since 2007 Deadly Sista Girlz have reached 5046 girls and currently have 1046 mentored through their program.
The Program focuses on building self-esteem and confidence, pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity, having practical cultural contribution in the community, positive social interactions, building relationships based on mutual respect, encouraging active self-development and yarning about sexual and women’s health, drug and alcohol abuse, road safety, healthy nutrition, financial literacy and healthy relationships.
